During the summer of 2006 in Lesterville we used over 250 pounds of sugar by September 15 feeding the hummingbirds that nest in the Peola Valley. This feeder was developed to be easy to fill and clean. The bottle is a glass one quart canning jar. This means that it has a wide opening for filling and cleaning and can be easlily replaced if it is broken. And of course you could run it through a dishwasher for cleaning. The harness is eighth inch nylon cord strung on an plated metal ring. The feeder has eight holes for the birds to feed, although we have frequently seen 12 or more birds sharing the feeder.
The formula for sugar to water in our feeder is one cup of sugar to one quart of water. Early in the spring we recommend that you only fill the feeder half way and please refill the feeder at least every five days. Remember if you wouldn't drink it, the birds won't either. I one time had a woman call me and say that the birds were not coming to her feeder and she wanted to know why the fluid in the feeder was green. Keep the sugar water fresh and you will attract more birds. It is also important to get your feeder out early. Here in Missouri the first birds usually show up around April 15. If you have your feeders out early they will remember that your feeder is a good place to check out daily and over the years you will attract more birds.
White Lid - Some of you that have used our feeder for three or more years are finding that the white lid has started to crack. If you will email me your address I will mail you a replacement lid at no cost.
